Patey, Raymond Walter (1946-2018)

It is with great sadness that the family of Raymond Walter Patey announce his passing at the Health Sciences Centre, in St. John’s, Newfoundland on Sunday, June 10, 2018. Raymond was 71.
Raymond was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland on October 24, 1946, to parents Hilda, a British army veteran/ war bride and Stan, a Royal Navy veteran.

Raymond spent his pre-school years back in England before his family immigrated to St. Anthony, Newfoundland in 1954. As a teenager, Raymond had a love for music and could often be found at the Athletic Club, playing the drums for the weekly teen dances. Although slight in stature, he played a mean game of hockey, fearlessly standing between the goal posts, deflecting the puck for the St. Anthony Saints Hockey Team.
In January, 1967 Raymond took the first step of what turned out to be a very successful career. Like his father before him, he marched off to basic training in the Canadian Navy. During his 30 plus year career that started on the deck of Canada’s last aircraft carrier, HMCS Bonaventure, Ray traveled the world. He retired in 1996 after achieving the highest non-commissioned rank in the Canadian Navy, Chief Petty Officer.
Raymond is predeceased by his wife; Muriel Legge, St. David’s, Newfoundland. They made their home in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia where they raised their 3 children; Roy, Jeannie and Terry. Upon his retirement from the navy, Raymond and Muriel returned to her home town where Raymond became active in the local community, becoming a member of the St. David’s NL Royal Legion and ultimately President of that branch. Under Raymond’s tenure as President, the Legion instituted, sponsored and operated the area’s ambulance services.

Following the death of his wife, Muriel on January 28, 2005, Raymond moved back to the city of his birth, St. John’s, to be near his siblings. Here, despite the distance, he remained active in the St. David’s Legion Club, offering his services via phone and computer.

Raymond was predeceased by his wife Muriel Patey (Legge); parents: Stanley and Hilda Pater and brother Trevor Patey.

He leaves to mourn his daughter: Jeanette (Gregory) Parker, Nova Scotia and his sons: Roy, Newfoundland, Terry, New Brunswick. Three grandchildren: Raymond, Johns and Susanna; sisters: Christine (Bernard) Stockley, Jasmine (Donald) Chafe; brothers: Tony (Beverly) Patey, Colin (Linda) Patey and a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
