Condolence: I was in his group in school at A level in Aberdare, Wales in the late 1950s. He was 'Brighteyes' to us. It is good to see all the lovely tributes to him from people he taught.

Condolence: Condolences to his family and friends. I only did one math course with him at MUN, but when I saw his name in the Telegram, I recalled him as a good teacher, friendly, and interested in helping his students. Rest In Peace.

Condolence: Well Mel ..as we called you here in Australia...It was certainly a pleasure and an honour to meet you and spend time with you..albeit not in happy circumstances. Your imput and help with Barbara's funeral was greatly appreciated. Rest peacefully now and let all your troubles disappear.. Oh and thanks for the endless IT lessons..

Condolence: We were surprised and deeply saddened to learn of Mel’s passing today. I and other members of our family were fortunate to have been students of Mel in Mathematics and in life. Not only did he excel in his teaching but he also took a real interest in the well being of his students which went well beyond the classroom and lasted through decades. Mel made significant positive contributions to thousands of students and to our University and the Province. He is remembered with great fondness and admiration and will be sorely missed.

Condolence: I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Lewis’ passing. He was an amazing professor and person. He saw the best in me at a low point in my life. He believed in my abilities when a lot of people, including myself, doubted them. I would not be where I am today without his help and support during my post-secondary education. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Condolence: For a couple of years I avoided a math course at University. After getting to a point where I could no longer do that, I signed up for a course and had the good fortune to have Dr. Lewis as my prof. He was fantastic: clear, helpful and funny. I got an A! I often think of the difference he made to me.

Condolence: Very sad to hear of Melvyn's passing. He was a great person to work with in the Mathematics Department. Many of his students still asked for him several years after he retired. A fond memory I have of him is his filing cabinet full of snacks, I think he may have had a sweet tooth. We were welcome to help ourselves at anytime. He was a very generous person. Our last visit with him was December 2017 at Christmas dinner/Retirement party. At that time he was as chipper as ever. His picture will hang in our coffee room in Memory of him forever. He asked me once why it was hung there and I told him we had mice.. and now we don't. He laughed. RIP Mel.

Condolence: Sad to learn of Melvyn’s passing. In the sixties when we all arrived in Newfoundland, good times were shared being proctors in the residences at MUN and many years later worked in the mathematics department.
