Cec Miller was like a father to me. With my own father dying young and Cec having 5 girls I think in many ways it provided us both with the opportunity to have a pretty special relationship.
Well let me tell you, it didn't start out that way......
I met Cec for the first time in 1988. I was 26 and I think Cec was 56. He seemed like a nice enough fellow, pehaps a little grumpy. Understandable, given he had just driven from Labrador City half way accross the country in a Motorhome covered an inch deep in dust, ON THE INSIDE. I guess that's what you get when you drive 300 km down a gravel road with the windows open. "Should have spent the extra $500 bucks for AC, Cec". Well you can just imagine how that went over...
A couple of months later I was in Cec's company again, this time to ask for his approval to have his daughter, Wendy's hand in marriage. Well let me tell you that went over like a lead balloon. I felt like something stuck to the bottom of Cec's shoe. I don't remember exactly what he said in the end but he obviously relented because we have now been married almost 30 years.
Despite all of the above I don't want to leave you with the impression that Cec and I didn't get along, far from it. Over the next 25 or so years he would get me on the phone in the middle of winter to taunt me with the list of arguments and debates that was going to have with me the following summer. This went on every year for each of those 25 years.
Next summer like clockwork, there was Cec on our doorstep, bottle of 5 star rye in hand raring to go. He would argue with me about things he didn't even believe in, just for the sake of having a hotly contested debate, and always over several drinks. Lot's of laughs....
I am really going to miss those times Cec. I looked forward to seeing you more than you could imagine. For me they will always be the fondest of memories.
RIP Cec Miller, You are the best kind of man!
