Condolence From: Allenby Pinhorn
Condolence: To George's Family. I was so surprised and saddened by the news of George's death. I of course was well acquainted with George since hiring him to work on cod-capelin interactions in the late 1990s. He was a very thorough scientist and soon became very knowledgeable in the interactions of cod and their environment. As time passed he also came to know more of gadoids in general and cod in particular than almost anyone else in his field. He and his knowledge will be greatly missed. Condolences from Florence and me to all his family.

Condolence From: John T Anderson
Condolence: Dear Daphne, Matthew, Erica and extended family. It is very sad to learn of George’s passing. George and I were scientific colleagues and friends from the moment we arrived in Newfoundland in 1979. And we were family friends before and after having children. I can remember George playing Tuesday night hockey in the early 1980s in his big red sweater, always smiling as he chased the puck. I remember George sitting around a campfire as we told stories to our young children in the wilderness of Trinity Bay. And I remember George forever teaching us all about the intricacies of Atlantic cod in a never-ending quest to understand. Fond memories of a friend who will be missed.

I first met George when he began working for DFO in the late 1970s and he remained a colleague in the Groundfish Division throughout our careers. He was a meticulous, careful scientist who took great pride in his work and it’s value. He also knew more about the history of cod fishery in NL than anyone else I ever met. Rest In Peace George!

Condolence From: George Winters
Condolence: I met George as a frosh Science student in Sept 1962. We graduated together, after which our academic careers diverged until George joined DFO as a gadoid scientist in the 1970s. George excelled as a dedicated resaearcher of NorthWest Atlantic gadoid stocks, including their productivity in relation to marine oceanology and cod’s pivotal interactions with key prey such as capelin and key predators such as seals. Both DFO ‘s marine mammal and capelin research programs benefited enormously from George’s contributions to our knowledge of NL marine ecosystem as exemplified by biological interactions of these species . George will be sadly missed by the gadoid intelligentsia . My condolences to his extended family. George Winters
