Condolence: Unfortunately, I was out of town last weekend and only learned of Mr. Knox's passing Sunday night. It has been many years but I have great memories hanging out with Rod, Steve, and of course Doug-less around the Knox's residence. Mr. Knox had great wit and it showed every time we showed up at the house looking for Rod. I was glad to see Mr. and Mrs. Knox at the War Memorial Nov 2018 and have a chat with Rod again. I wish you all the best during this difficult time. Take Care. Derek

Condolence From: Doug less Pendergast
Condolence: My earliest memory at 3 years old is Leo telling me as i was playing on his lawn with Rod that my new baby brother was coming home from the hospital. From this early age to my teens- tbe Knox household was my second home....for close to 5o years Mr.Knox would get amusement (as would I) when he would question why i was so lazy and didn't dig more ....cuz my parents of course named me Dug-less(Douglas). From camping trips on the northern penninsula...to blueberry picking on labour day...to summer days in Open Hall he treated me like his third son. Mr. Knox was a larger than life character..witty...a prankster and a great story teller.....i could write a book...but can't decide if it should be about the war veteran- who seldom talked of his war experiences or if it could be an adventure novel about the pioneer days of the "HEIGHTS"...perhaps a joke book...either way I'm sure it would be a best seller. My condolences go first to Mrs. Knox- my second mom of my youth. Rod - We have some many stories to share of your dad and my thoughts are with you along with Kathy Stephanie Greta and Pat.Wish i was there to celebrate your dad's great life. LOVE and Hugs - Dug-less Pendergast.

Condolence From: Sybille Keller
Condolence: My first husband Joe Boudreau (passed away 1989) often spoke fondly of his Uncle Leo (his mother Evelyn's brother) and Aunt Mary. He grew up in Dartmouth, N.S. but I think enjoyed many visits from Leo and Mary when he was younger and also visited them in St. John's. Later on when Joe lived in Calgary, Leo and Mary would come to visit their son Pat and meet up with Joe at the same time. I do remember that Joe was very proud of his uncle Leo and all his accomplishments while working with the St. John's fire department. On behalf of Joe's daughter Annie and his grandsons Austin and Reid, and myself..we would like to send our sincere condolences to Mary and her family for their loss.

Condolence From: Winston Crocker
Condolence: It is with a heavy heart and with the upmost respect that I send, on behalf of my family, our sincere condolences to the entire Knox family on the passing of your Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Great Great Grandfather Leo Knox. I know that your loss is being felt today by all of us who have had the opportunity of not only serving with him, working with him or just by having the privilege of knowing him. Because of his Military Service during the Second World War, his involvement with his beloved 166 Newfoundland Field Regiment in the years that followed and his dedication to the Royal Canadian Legion, Captain Knox will undoubtedly be missed by his military comrades and military family. My personal memories of Captain Knox began when I joined the St. John's Regional Fire Department in 1968. In those early days I very quickly began to realize that Leo Knox was not only a fellow Firefighter who was willing to take us younger lads under his wing and help guide us through our first years of learning but he always did it with his many, sometimes serious and sometimes funny stories. Stories of which were plentiful and during many Social Times would be accompanied by a little tune. It was always a pleasure to hear him use his beautiful voice in song. My memories of serving under his command as a Fire Inspector throughout the 1970-80's until his retirement will always stay with me. He was a great leader and mentor who motivated and taught all of us, who had the pleasure of working with him, to always try and achieve their very best. His love and dedication for the Fire Service, especially Fire Prevention and his ability to educate not only the citizens of St. John's but the entire province on the importance of Fire Prevention will always be remembered. Captain Leo Knox or "Skipper" as I would sometimes affectionately and respectfully call him will always be remembered for his unselfish service to the St. John's Regional Fire Department by all members who had the pleasure of working with him throughout his distinguished Fire Service Career. Rest in Peace my friend! And as he would always made me sign my written reports at the end of the day "Respectfully Submitted, Winston E. Crocker"

Condolence: My condolences to Leo's family. I had the honour of meeting Leo when I was writing a Remembrance Day column for The Telegram in 2011. At the time, I wrote, "I have shaken hands with prime ministers and presidents, future kings and princesses, but I have felt no stronger a grip than that of Leo Knox". I remember the interview well, and the feeling I experienced joining Leo and Mary selling poppies at Sobeys. He was a very special man. Prayers and good thoughts for all the family.

Condolence: Mrs Knox and Family Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Captain Knox. I had the privilege and pleasure of working with Captain Knox for quite a few years with the Fire Prevention Division of the SJRFD. He was a great mentor to me and the expertise that he had in the area of Fire Prevention was unequalled. I learned a lot from Captain Knox , not only how to deliver a good fire prevention program to the people but how to help people who needed our assistance in making their homes and businesses safe from fire. He treated everyone as an equal and with upmost respect. The memories I have in working with him will stay with me forever and I thank him for helping me become a better person and a better fire officer. RIP Captain Knox. Thank you for Your service as a veteran of WW11 and your fire service . When one mentions fire prevention. The name Captain Leo Knox comes to mind
