As captured on the Service Program:
Laura Joyce Gertrude Leaman nee Reid
Born to William Reid and Harriett (Fillier) June 27, 1932 in Englee, White Bay in the Dominion of Newfoundland. Joyce was one of 11 children. She was raised in a traditional Newfoundland family, with everyone involved in the family business. As she would so proudly say, they never wanted for anything and neither did their neighbors. They worked hard and cared for each other. She was very proud of her roots. She and Ray made many trips “out over the road” to visit family.
Joyce came to St. John’s in 1948 to finish her schooling and have corrective surgery for a childhood accident. She graduated in 1950 from Prince of Wales Collegiate (PWC) with her commercial program. Shortly after she started work with the Federal Dept. of Employment and Immigration on Buckmaster’s Circle, where she met the love of her life, Ray Leaman. They were married on August 24, 1954 at Church of St. Mary the Virgin on the Southside of St. John’s. As a married woman, she had to leave work and she became a full time homemaker, and in time, started a new full time job as a loving and nurturing mother. As members of the Sunnydale Housing Cooperative, Ray and Joyce built their home and the family grew with 6 children; twins Calvin and Elizabeth, John, Janice, Karen and Chris. The house was full with family and in time it was more complete with son in laws, daughter in laws and grandchildren. It was a very happy home with many good times. The love of her life passed in May 2015 and life changed. She lived by herself with the help of family and friends. She made a point of keeping in touch with long-time friends on “The Heights” even after she decided to move into Hillcrest Estates.
A Loving mother, doting grandmother and great grandmother, she dearly loved and was fully devoted to her children and family. Having said her final goodbyes to her loved ones, Joyce’s final message to them and each of you “Be kind to each other”. Joyce lived to serve and please others and has finally retired to rest.
