At 12 years old I was ready to move on from cub scouts to boy scouts. I was a member of St Thomas’s cub scout pack but wanted to join the St Mary’s scout troupe where my “Uncle Millar” was the Scout Master. Although our weekly meetings were much further from home my dad dutifully drove me to the old St. Mary’s Parish Hall behind the CN Railway station. I had a wonderful 3 years there and got to know my “Uncle Millar” as a scout leader where he was an exemplary role model to us all.
Another fond memory is the engagement party Minnie and Millar hosted when Christine and I got married in 1970. Both of us always felt very close to both of them although we moved away from Newfoundland that same year. Millar was always very kind to us both and always went out of his way to show how happy he was to see us whenever we came home for a visit.
Christine has commented that she always left Millar’s company feeling good because of his sincere and genuine interest in our lives.
He was a special man and we feel privileged to have known him.
